In the absence of a systematic approach to come up with strong inventions, the only approach left for enterprises is to file a base patent and then file incremental patents in and around the base patent and hope that this complex maze of patents will deter competition. This is actually called a patent thicket, not a patent portfolio in the real sense. It is quite inefficient really, in terms of money spent and is only viable for larger enterprises with deeper pockets. Suits the lawyers just fine!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A strong patent, by definition, is difficult to circumvent, has a wide opportunity window and from an enforcement perspective deals with an invention for which it is easy to detect infringement. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;By the way, the patent portfolio approach in actuality, is not an alternative approach to a strong patent (it is not either this or hat). A portfolio of strong patents is significantly stronger than a portfolio of weak patents.
